The most expensive mistake in scholarship hunting is not a weak essay. It is spending three weeks on an award you were never eligible for — or missing one that needed no application at all.
We checked sixteen international scholarships against the awarding bodies' own pages in September 2026. Several work nothing like the listicles suggest. Some cannot be applied for by a student under any circumstances. Some are closed to Indian applicants entirely. And several of the best ones need no scholarship form at all — you are considered automatically, and the only thing you can influence is the strength of your admission application.
Here is what that means for how you spend your time.
Some scholarships are applied for by your university, not by you
This is the category that wastes the most time, because the award is real, you may well be eligible, and yet there is no form for you to fill in.
Erasmus+ is the clearest example. The European Commission states it plainly: higher education students do not apply directly for a grant. The grant agreement is held by the sending or receiving institution, and the selection criteria are set by the university you are already enrolled at. The route is internal — you apply through your own university's international office, they select, and if you are chosen you sign a participant agreement with them. If your university has no Erasmus+ project, there is no way in. That is the first thing to establish, not the last.
Study in Canada Scholarships works the same way and catches people harder, because the name sounds like something you apply for. It funds short-term exchange of up to eight months, and it runs institution to institution: your own university must already hold an exchange agreement with a Canadian institution, you tell your university you are interested, and the Canadian partner applies on your behalf. You stay enrolled at home and keep paying tuition there, pay no tuition in Canada, and the credits count towards your degree at home. Start by asking your international office whether a Canadian partner exists at all.
Commonwealth Scholarships sit in between. You cannot apply straight to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission — applications go through a nominating body, and this is the part that catches people: nominators set their own closing dates, which fall earlier than the CSC deadline and may already have passed by the time you read about the award.
Some are not open to Indian applicants at all
Eligibility rules usually sit a click or two below the headline, and a scholarship aggregator will rarely surface them.
SEED-2, run by Global Affairs Canada, is delivered through partnerships between Canadian institutions and partners in ASEAN member states, the Pacific Island countries and Mongolia. India is none of those. There is no route in, whatever your qualifications.
The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung scholarship cannot be applied for from India. FES awards only to applicants who are already enrolled at a German university, or who already have a supervisor for a doctorate there, at the time they apply. You must also certify German at C1 or TestDaF, and the application form exists in German only. It is a scholarship for after you have arrived and funded the first step some other way — useful to know, but not if you were counting on it to get you there.
The University of Vienna's headline awards — Leistungsstipendien for academic merit and Förderungsstipendien towards a thesis — are for students with EU, EEA or Swiss citizenship and those with equal status. What is open to international applicants is the tuition-waiver scholarship for the university's summer and winter schools, applied for at the same time as the school itself.
Some need no application at all
This is the happier surprise, and it changes where your effort should go.
HKUST considers every applicant for its academic admissions scholarships and states that no separate application is required. The admission application is the scholarship application, and the decision reaches you with your offer.
PolyU is similar: full-time undergraduate applicants are considered for the university's own merit-based scholarships without a separate application, and only scholarships run by outside organisations need one. If you are applying on international qualifications you complete a scholarship section inside the eAdmission form while you apply — that is the whole process.
Danish Government Scholarships are not applied for through the Danish government at all. It gives each Danish university a limited number of scholarships and, in their words, they are "administered by the Danish universities, who each select the students". You are considered through your admission application. They are open to full-degree students who are citizens outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland, which includes India, and are awarded as a full or partial tuition fee waiver, a grant towards living costs, or both.
The University of Gothenburg's main award, the Axel Adler Scholarship, is a tuition fee waiver with no restriction on citizenship. There is no separate scholarship deadline to miss and no separate form: you apply for the programme through universityadmissions.se, pay the application fee, and list Gothenburg as your first choice.
The pattern is worth internalising. For a large number of university-funded awards there is nothing to write. The scholarship is decided on the application you were going to submit anyway — so the hours you were holding back for a scholarship essay are better spent on the admission application itself.
Some are one name covering a hundred separate applications
GREAT Scholarships is jointly funded by the UK government and the British Council with participating UK universities and is worth at least £10,000 towards tuition — but there is no central form and the British Council does not take applications. Each participating university runs its own GREAT scholarship and you apply on that university's scholarship page, which is why the closing date differs at every one of them. It covers one-year taught master's courses only, and the list of participating universities and eligible courses changes every year.
KU Leuven is the same shape with a sharper edge: there is no single KU Leuven scholarship, every programme sets its own requirements and deadline, and each academic year is listed separately — so an open-looking call is often last year's.
The University of Malta runs a set of separate calls, most of them tied to a nationality or a particular institute. Read the individual call before you count on it.
Five questions to ask before you spend a week on an application
- Who submits it? You, your current university, or a nominating body. If it is not you, your first email is to your own international office, not to the funder.
- Which countries are eligible? Check the list rather than assuming that "international" includes India.
- Is there actually a separate form? If the award is decided on your admission application, put the time there instead.
- Whose deadline binds you? On nominated awards the nominator's date falls earlier than the funder's headline date.
- Which academic year is this page for? University scholarship pages are archived by year, and old calls stay online looking open.
Three dates worth knowing this autumn
Chevening closes at 11:00 UTC on 6 October 2026 for the 2027/28 cycle. Unlike Commonwealth you apply directly — there is no nominating body and no Indian agency in between. You need three university choices, and references fall on later deadlines, so a missing reference does not stop you submitting.
Commonwealth Master's Scholarships close at 16:00 BST on 20 October 2026 — but check your nominating agency's own date first and work to that one.
The University of Lausanne closes on 1 November 2026 for 2027/28. It awards around ten master's excellence scholarships a year, only to applicants who took their first degree at a foreign university, so you compete against other internationals rather than against Swiss graduates. It is CHF 1,600 a month, and UNIL says plainly that this does not cover the cost of living in Switzerland — budget for the gap rather than assuming it is full funding.
