GRE books and free resources worth using
The GRE has more preparation material than any test on this site, and most of it is unnecessary. Two things move a score: official full-length practice under real timing, and reviewing why each wrong answer was wrong. Everything else is optional.

Buy official material first. Commercial books are useful for technique and for volume, but their questions are imitations and several publishers write them harder than the real test, which distorts your sense of where you stand.
How to spot outdated material
- It describes a 3 hour 45 minute test.
- It teaches two essays — Analyze an Issue and Analyze an Argument.
- It mentions an unscored or research section you should treat as scored.
- It gives 20 questions per Verbal or Quant section.
All four belong to the pre-September-2023 GRE. The questions in such a book are still valid practice — the content did not change — but its timing advice, section strategy and essay chapters are for a test that no longer runs.
The part books cannot do
Quant and Verbal are self-markable: you check the key and you know. Analytical Writing is not. You cannot tell from the inside whether your essay is a 4.0 or a 5.0, and reading a model answer does not tell you what is wrong with yours. ScoreItNow! or a teacher is the only way to close that gap — and given the essay rarely decides an admission, one scored essay is usually enough.

Yes, and most people do. The item types and the mathematics are published, official practice mirrors the real interface, and the only thing self-study cannot give you is a scored essay.
