German preparation material worth using
German has better free official material than any exam on this site. The Goethe-Institut publishes free interactive exam training for every level, TestDaF publishes free practice material, and Deutsche Welle runs a complete free course from A1 to C. For most students, paying for material is unnecessary — paying for speaking practice is not.
The free official material
- Goethe online exam training — free, interactive and accessible, for every level from A1 to C2. It is the format practice, and it is the authoritative one.
- TestDaF practice material — free, published with registration, covering the real task formats.
- Goethe-Test PRO demo — a free demo version if the workplace test is what you need.
- On-site libraries at Max Mueller Bhavan centres, with practice materials, books and German-language films.
Deutsche Welle, which is free and complete
Deutsche Welle publishes a full German course from beginner to advanced, free, including graded news audio at slow and natural speed. For listening — the module Indian students most often underestimate — it is more useful than any paid resource, because the difficulty is exposure rather than instruction.
Ten minutes a day beats an hour a week here. Ear training is frequency, not duration.
What is worth paying for
- A course with contact hours, if you are below B1. Reaching a level is instruction time and self-study is slow at the start.
- Speaking practice with a person. At several levels Sprechen is a paired exam, and you cannot practise reacting to a partner alone.
- Writing feedback. You cannot mark your own Schreiben — you do not know which of your sentences a German reader would not write.
Notice what is not on that list: books. The official material covers format, Deutsche Welle covers input, and what remains is the part that needs another human.
How to spot material that will waste your time
- It ignores the modular structure and treats a Goethe exam as pass-or-fail overall.
- It does not mention the combined certificate for digital TestDaF.
- It teaches vocabulary lists without gender. A noun learnt without its article is a noun you will get wrong.
- It claims real exam questions, which are not published and not leaked.
