IELTS books and free resources worth your time
Most students buy too many IELTS books and use too few of them. The material that moves a band is real past-format practice with real answer keys, and a way to get feedback on Writing and Speaking. Almost everything else is optional.
Start with the free official material
Before buying anything, work through what the test owners publish themselves. It is the only material guaranteed to match the current format, and it costs nothing.

- The computer-delivered familiarisation test, which is worth doing even if you feel confident: the on-screen interface, the highlighting tools and the timer are not what a book prepares you for.
The books actually worth buying

Buy the most recent Cambridge volumes you can. Older ones remain useful for Reading and Listening practice, but anything predating the current computer-delivered format will teach you habits — like the ten-minute Listening transfer time — that no longer exist.
How to tell real material from imitation
- Does it have an answer key with explanations? Practice without a key teaches you nothing about why you were wrong.
- Does it match the current format? If it describes paper-based IELTS as the standard, or gives Listening transfer time, it is out of date.
- Are the Writing model answers band-referenced? A model answer with no band attached is a piece of writing, not a target.
- Is it being sold as "real exam questions"? Genuine IELTS material is never leaked, and anything claiming to be is either invented or someone else's copyright.

The part books cannot do
Reading and Listening are self-markable: you check the key, you know where you stand. Writing and Speaking are not. You cannot tell from the inside whether your essay is a 6.0 or a 7.0, and reading a model answer does not tell you what is wrong with yours.
That gap is the one thing worth spending money or time on — a teacher, a marking service, or at minimum recording your Speaking and listening back to it, which is uncomfortable and effective. Our own free lessons each end in a drill for exactly this reason: reading about a task type is not practising it.
A week of free resources, in order
- The computer-delivered familiarisation test, so the interface is not new on the day.
- One full official practice test, timed, to find your real starting point.
- The task types of your weakest section, one at a time, untimed until the instructions are automatic.
- Back to timed sections, because pacing is what limits most bands.
- A full sitting a week before the test, at the time of day your test is booked for.

For Listening and Reading, yes — the official sites publish practice with answer keys. The gap is Writing and Speaking, where you cannot mark yourself and need feedback from someone who can.
For Reading and Listening practice, yes. For format and strategy, anything that describes paper-based IELTS as standard or gives Listening transfer time is teaching a test that no longer runs in India.
