PTE preparation material worth using
PTE rewards a different kind of preparation from a hand-marked test. Because the scoring is algorithmic and several item types are mechanical, scored practice on real item types is worth far more than reading about them — and the official material is the only material scored the same way the test is.
Start with the free official tools
- A free myPTE account, which carries Pearson's own preparation material and is the same account you book and receive results in.
- The official item-type guides and videos, which show exactly how each of the twenty types behaves on screen.
- The free practice test, which matters more here than on other exams: the interface, the timers and the microphone check are part of what you are practising.
Do at least one timed run in the real interface before test day. Students lose marks on read aloud and repeat sentence purely because the recording started before they were ready.
Paid official practice, and when it is worth it
Pearson sells scored practice tests that return a report in the same format as the real thing. They are the only practice scored by the actual algorithm, which is the whole argument for them: a human tutor cannot tell you what the machine will make of your fluency, and no third-party mock can either.
One scored practice test about ten days before your date is usually enough — early enough to act on, late enough to reflect your real level.
What third-party material is good for
- Item-type drilling — repetition on read aloud, repeat sentence and write from dictation, where volume genuinely helps.
- Templates for the essay and summarise spoken text, used as a structure rather than memorised text.
- Vocabulary and collocation, which decides the fill-in-the-blanks items.
What it is not good for is predicting your score. Third-party "AI scoring" is not Pearson's algorithm and does not behave like it, so treat any number it gives you as a rough signal and nothing more.
How to spot material that will waste your time
- It claims to have real exam questions. Genuine PTE content is not leaked; anything sold as such is invented or infringing.
- It describes a three-hour test. PTE was shortened to two hours in 2021 — older material is teaching a test that no longer runs.
- It gives no feedback on speaking, which is the section most Indian test takers lose marks in.
- It promises a guaranteed score. Nobody can.
