GRE scores: what 130–170 means and what programmes ask for
The GRE reports three numbers: Verbal Reasoning 130 to 170, Quantitative Reasoning 130 to 170, and Analytical Writing 0 to 6 in half-point steps. There is no combined score that matters — programmes read the two 130–170 numbers separately, and which one they care about depends entirely on the subject.
How the score is built
- Verbal and Quantitative are each scored 130 to 170 in one-point increments.
- Scoring takes into account how many questions you answered correctly across both sections of that measure and how difficult those sections were — which is what section-level adaptivity means in practice.
- Analytical Writing is scored 0 to 6 in half-point increments and reported separately.
What a competitive score looks like
The honest answer is that it depends on your field, and that the two measures are not weighted equally by every programme.

These are orientation, not requirements. Most programmes publish the average score of their admitted class rather than a minimum, and that average is the number worth aiming past — a "minimum" on a GRE page is usually a screening floor, not a competitive target.
Analytical Writing, and how much it matters
Scored 0 to 6 by a trained rater and an ETS scoring engine. Many programmes barely look at it — but a weak score is noticed, particularly for anything involving teaching, writing or research supervision. A 4.0 passes without comment, a 4.5 to 5.0 is solid, and pushing beyond that rarely repays the preparation.
If your score comes back lower than you expected, a Score Review for the Analytical Writing measure costs US$60 (INR 5,900). It is the only GRE measure that can be reviewed.
Validity and ScoreSelect
- GRE scores are reportable for five years from the test date — far longer than the two years an IELTS, TOEFL or PTE score lasts.
- ScoreSelect lets you choose which test dates to send. On test day you can send your most recent scores or all scores; afterwards you can choose any single date or all of them.
- Programmes see only the dates you send, so a weak first attempt need not follow you.
Five-year validity changes the planning. Sitting the GRE in your final year of a bachelor's and applying two years later is entirely normal, and it is often the cheapest time to do it — you are still in study habit.
If the score is short
There is no single-section retake. A second attempt is a full test at the full INR 25,522, so before rebooking work out which measure actually let you down and whether the target programme even reads it. An engineering applicant with Quant 168 and Verbal 148 is usually competitive; the same applicant retaking to lift Verbal is often spending INR 25,522 on a number nobody will weigh.
