GRE exam fee in India 2026: INR 25,522, and what else costs money
The GRE General Test costs US$249, or INR 25,522, for test takers in India — a figure ETS raised on 1 August 2026. It is the most expensive of the tests on this site by a clear margin, which makes the fees around it worth understanding before you book rather than after.

ETS raised the General Test fee to US$249 and the Subject Test fee to US$199 with effect from 1 August 2026. Registrations completed on or after that date pay the new amounts.

At INR 4,150 per university, additional score reports are the most expensive on any test we cover — IELTS charges INR 350, TOEFL US$29 and PTE nothing. Your fee includes four free reports chosen on test day, so decide your four before you sit rather than after.
The Fee Reduction Program
ETS runs a Fee Reduction Program for candidates who can demonstrate financial need, and a voucher brings the General Test down to US$100. It also includes free access to preparation material ETS values at US$100: both POWERPREP PLUS practice tests and ScoreItNow! Online Writing Practice.
- Eligibility covers demonstrated financial need, unemployment with compensation, Peace Corps service, and certain national programmes working with under-represented groups.
- You apply with the GRE Fee Reduction Request form, and voucher numbers arrive by email within about two weeks of approval.
This is under-used by Indian applicants, partly because it is buried on the fees page. If cost is what is stopping you, read the eligibility criteria before you assume it does not apply.
What GRE really costs
A single attempt with four score reports is INR 25,522. A student who reschedules once and sends three extra reports is at roughly INR 43,600 — and a retake takes it past INR 69,000. The GRE punishes an unplanned attempt harder than any other test here, which is the practical argument for taking a free full-length practice test before you book a date.
