GMAT preparation material worth your money

Sit one of those two exams before you book a date. A GMAT attempt costs US$275 and a cancellation never returns more than US$110, so choosing your date against a real score rather than a feeling is the single most valuable thing free material can do for you.

Buy the current edition. This matters more on the GMAT than anywhere else right now, because three whole topic areas were removed and older guides still teach them.
How to spot outdated GMAT material
- It teaches sentence correction.
- It contains a geometry chapter.
- It prepares you for an Analytical Writing Assessment essay.
- It reports scores on the 200 to 800 scale.
- It describes a three-hour-plus exam with four sections.
Any one of these means the book predates the current format. Its Quant and critical-reasoning questions may still be decent practice; its structure, timing and strategy chapters are not.
What to practise that is not a question bank
- Mental arithmetic, ten minutes daily, out loud, no paper. Fraction-percentage conversions, squares to 25, percentages of three-digit numbers. Dull, and worth more points per minute than anything else in Quant.
- Naming the question type on every critical reasoning item before reading the options.
- Bookmark discipline — practise stopping at ninety seconds and moving on, because that habit is what the three edits are for.
- Section order, sat twice in the order you will use on the day.
