TOEFL preparation material that matches the current test

Start with ETS, and this year more than ever

• The official TOEFL resources hub, which is updated to the current format.
• ETS's free sample questions for every current task type — Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Listen and Repeat, Take an Interview.
• The TOEFL iBT Information Bulletin, which governs policies, deadlines and fees.
• For the Home Edition, the equipment and environment requirements, read before booking.

Because the task types are new, official samples are not just the most reliable material — for several tasks they are the only material that exists.

How to check a book before you buy it

Open it to the contents page and look for anything from the old test. If you find these, put it down:

• A 0 to 120 scoring explanation as the current scale.
• Four speaking tasks, or timings of 15/45 and 30/60 seconds.
• Integrated writing — read, listen, summarise the relationship.
• A three-hour or two-and-a-half-hour test length.

A book published before 2026 cannot describe the current test, however good it was. Its reading and listening passages remain useful raw material for practice, but its strategy chapters are teaching the wrong exam.

What is still worth using from the old world

• Academic reading and listening passages — the content is still the right register, even where the question format has changed.
• Write for an Academic Discussion material, because that task survived.
• Grammar references, which are more useful now than before given Build a Sentence tests structure directly.
• Vocabulary in context, which Complete the Words rewards.

The part material cannot do

Reading and Listening are self-markable. Speaking and Writing are not — you cannot tell from the inside whether your discussion post is a 4 or a 5, and reading a sample answer will not tell you what is wrong with yours. That gap is the thing worth spending money or a teacher's time on.

At minimum, record your Listen and Repeat and interview answers and play them back. It is uncomfortable and it is the fastest feedback available for free.

A free week, in order

1. ETS's sample questions for every current task type, untimed, to remove surprises.
2. One timed reading section, to feel what fifty items in thirty minutes is actually like.
3. Daily sentence-level grammar, fifteen minutes, for Build a Sentence.
4. Recorded speaking practice, played back once for pace and continuity.
5. A full sitting a week out, at the time of day you are booked for.
