GMAT exam pattern: three sections, your order, and a real edit tool
The GMAT is three sections of 45 minutes — Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights — taken in any order you choose on the day. Each section is weighted equally in your Total Score, and you may bookmark questions and change up to three answers per section at the end.
The three sections

Each section is weighted equally, which is the point most candidates miss: Data Insights is a third of your score, and it is the section least like anything in an Indian engineering or commerce degree.
Data Insights is the only section with an on-screen calculator. Quantitative has none.
You choose the section order
You pick the order on test day. Choose it in practice and keep it — this is not a decision to make while nervous.
- Most people do best leading with their strongest section, because a confident first 45 minutes settles the other two.
- If one section reliably exhausts you, do not put it last.
- Whatever you choose, sit at least two full practice exams in that order so the sequence is familiar.
Bookmark and edit: three per section
You may bookmark any question and, at the end of a section, change up to three answers. Used properly this changes pacing completely.
- A question that is not yielding after about ninety seconds gets an answer, a bookmark and a move on. You have lost nothing.
- Bookmark deliberately, not defensively. Twelve bookmarks and three edits means spending your review time choosing which to look at.
- Aim for about four or five bookmarks in a section — a review you can actually use.
Unanswered questions are penalised
GMAC states it plainly: there is a penalty for not completing a section, and your score is reduced in proportion to the number of questions left unanswered. This is different from the GRE, where an unanswered question is simply a question you got wrong.
The practical rule is absolute: never leave a question blank. In the last thirty seconds of any section, answer everything still unanswered, including questions you have not read. A guess is worth more than a blank, every time.
What is no longer on the GMAT
- Sentence correction — removed from Verbal.
- Geometry — removed from Quantitative.
- The Analytical Writing Assessment essay — gone.
- The 200 to 800 score scale — replaced by 205 to 805.
A great deal of GMAT material still on sale prepares for that retired format. If your book teaches sentence correction or geometry, or reports a 200–800 score, it is teaching an exam that no longer exists.
