German exam fees in India: why there is no single number
There is no national German exam fee in India. Goethe-Institut exam fees are set by the individual Max Mueller Bhavan centre — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Pune — and published on that centre's own booking page. Any site quoting one figure for the country is guessing, so this page tells you where the real number is instead.
Where your actual fee is published
- Go to the Goethe-Institut India exams page and pick your level — A1 through C2, or TestDaF.
- Choose the centre you would sit at. Each Max Mueller Bhavan publishes its own dates and fees.
- The fee appears on the booking page for that date at that centre.
Two things follow. Fees differ between cities, so the nearest centre is not always the cheapest — though travel usually cancels the difference. And a fee quoted to you by a coaching institute is not the exam fee; ask what is coaching and what is the exam.
Budget for the route, not the exam
On the German route the exam is the small cost. What a student actually spends is:
- Tuition to reach the level — A1 to B2 is roughly 600 hours of instruction, and that is the real bill.
- One exam fee per level if you certify each step, or one at the end if you only need the final certificate.
- A retake, which on the modular Goethe exams can be a single module rather than the whole thing.
- The APS, and since 2026 the dMAT for many master's applicants — neither is a language cost, and both are compulsory.
Most German-taught programmes want TestDaF 4 in all four parts or DSH-2. If that is your target, paying to certify A1 and A2 along the way is optional — useful for motivation and for a visa in some cases, but not required by the university.
Modular retakes, which save money
The Goethe-Zertifikat exams are modular: Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen are taken and certified separately. If you pass three and fail one, you re-sit only the module you failed rather than the whole exam.
This is a genuine financial advantage over the English tests, where only IELTS offers a single-skill retake. Check the retake rules at your centre before assuming you must repeat everything.
