German exam dates in India: session-based, and they fill

How dates work

• Goethe-Zertifikat dates are set by each Max Mueller Bhavan centre and published on that centre's booking pages. Availability differs by city and by level.
• TestDaF runs on fixed worldwide dates roughly monthly — for example 12 November 2026, 10 December 2026 and 20 January 2027 — at over 500 centres in 100 countries.
• Both require registration in advance; neither can be taken on demand.

Check the current TestDaF calendar on testdaf.de rather than relying on a list anywhere else. Dates are published a long way ahead and the calendar is the authoritative one.

Planning backwards from a German intake

German admissions run to hard deadlines — commonly 15 July for the winter intake and 15 January for summer — and the language certificate has to exist before the application, not after.

1. Work back from the application deadline, not the intake.
2. Add the APS, which takes several weeks and is compulsory for Indian applicants.
3. Add the dMAT if it applies to you — engineering, commerce or business degrees applying from summer semester 2027 onwards.
4. Then place the language exam far enough ahead that a retake still fits.

Because the certificates never expire, sitting the exam earlier than you strictly need is free of risk. That is not true of an English test, and it is the main planning advantage of the German route.

Book early for the levels everybody wants

B1 and B2 are the levels most candidates need, which makes them the ones that fill first at Indian centres. If your plan depends on a particular session, register as soon as it opens rather than when you feel ready — you can prepare after booking, and you cannot conjure a seat.
