Who has to take the dMAT — and who is exempt
The dMAT is not optional for the people it applies to, and it applies to fewer people than the panic suggests. Three questions decide it: what your bachelor's degree was in, which intake you are applying for, and when you started your APS.
The three questions
- Is your previous degree in an affected field? In the introductory phase these are: Engineering; Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics; and Business / Management.
- Are you applying for a master's from the summer semester 2027 intake or later? Earlier intakes, including winter semester 2026/27, are outside the requirement.
- Did you start your APS before 29 June 2026? If so, you are exempt.
If the answer to the first two is yes and the third is no, you need the dMAT. If any one of them goes the other way, you do not.
The exemptions, precisely
- You completed your APS online registration before 29 June 2026.
- You shipped your complete APS application documents before 29 June 2026.
- You already hold an APS certificate for that procedure — a completed APS does not need redoing.
- Your application is for the winter semester 2026/27 master's intake or earlier.
- Your previous degree is outside the affected fields.
If your degree is a mixed or borderline subject, APS India publishes the official list of affected study fields. Read the list rather than reasoning from the name of your degree — "Information Technology" and "Business Analytics" are exactly the cases where guessing goes wrong.
What the dMAT does not replace
- It does not replace APS document verification. APS India continues to verify the authenticity and formal plausibility of your academic documents exactly as before.
- It does not replace recognition of your degree. Check your university and your degree in anabin before registering for anything — a degree that does not clear anabin is a problem the dMAT cannot solve.
- It is not a language test. Your German or English requirement is separate and unaffected.
Why it gates everything
APS India will not issue your APS certificate until the dMAT certificate has been submitted and the result checked against the information g.a.s.t. holds. Without an APS certificate a German master's application does not proceed.
You may submit your APS documents before the dMAT certificate exists — the certificate simply has to arrive before the APS certificate is issued. That ordering is useful: it means the paperwork can be moving while you prepare.

Only if your previous degree is in engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business or management, you are applying for a German master's from the summer semester 2027 intake onwards, and you did not start your APS before 29 June 2026.
No. It is the digital Master Test, an academic aptitude test for master's applicants run by g.a.s.t. with German universities. Anything describing it as a German medical admission test is describing a different exam.
No. Applicants who have completed the APS procedure and received their certificate are not required to take the dMAT for that procedure.
No. It is an additional element of the APS documentation. APS India still verifies your academic documents, and the dMAT does not replace degree recognition in anabin either.
