IELTS eligibility: who can take it, and what you need to book
IELTS has no academic eligibility criteria. There is no minimum qualification, no percentage requirement, no restriction by nationality and no limit on how many times you may sit it. What it does require is identification — and in India that means a passport.
Age
There is no upper age limit and no formal lower one, but the IELTS partners do not recommend the test for candidates under 16. Below that age the content and the test conditions are not designed for the candidate, and a low band is more likely to reflect that than the student's English.
A test taker under 18 needs a parent or lawful guardian's identity document submitted to IDP India on or before test day. Without it the candidate is not permitted to sit, and 75% of the fee is refunded — an expensive administrative miss.
Identification: the passport
In India, the passport is the identification IELTS uses. You will need:
- A photocopy of the first and last pages, plus any observation pages, submitted with your application.
- The original passport with you on test day — the same one you registered with.
- The passport to be valid, and the name on it to match your booking exactly.
Start the passport before you start preparing if you do not already hold one. It is the single most common reason a student who is ready to test cannot book, and it is not something a coaching class or a consultancy can speed up.
How many times you can take it
As many as you like. There is no waiting period between attempts and no cap on the number of sittings, and universities look at the result you send them rather than the number of attempts behind it. From 2023 you may also retake a single section through One Skill Retake instead of sitting the whole test again — available after a full computer-delivered test, and it must be taken in the same delivery mode as the original.

Booking the wrong one is not recoverable by explanation: a university that requires Academic will not accept General Training, and a UK visa that requires a SELT will not accept a standard IELTS. Read the requirement on the official page for your programme or visa route before you pay.
