Scholarships to study in the USA for Indian students
US funding works differently from everywhere else, and the difference matters: the largest source of money for Indian postgraduates is not a scholarship at all. It is assistantships — paid teaching or research roles that usually carry a tuition waiver with them.

Assistantships are the real funding route
- Teaching assistantship (TA) — you teach or support a course; usually a stipend plus a tuition waiver.
- Research assistantship (RA) — you work on funded research; same structure, and more common in PhD programmes.
- Graduate assistantship — administrative work in a department, also carrying a waiver at many institutions.
These are awarded by departments, not by a central scholarships office, and frequently decided alongside admission. That is why contacting faculty whose research matches yours is a funding strategy and not merely a networking one.
The rest of the landscape
- Fulbright-Nehru, administered in India by USIEF, is prestigious, fully funded and extremely competitive.
- Institutional merit aid is common at master's level and usually partial.
- Need-based aid is largely restricted to US citizens and residents at undergraduate level — a common and expensive misunderstanding.
Budget on the assumption of no funding and treat an assistantship as upside. A US master's planned around funding that does not materialise is the most expensive planning error in this market.
