We haven't confirmed this year's application window, and these dates move every cycle — so we won't print one. The official page is the only reliable source. Ask us and we'll track it for you and tell you when it opens.

Eligibility

For Indian citizens already registered for a PhD at an Indian institution — for the 2027-28 cycle, registered on or before 1 November 2025. It funds dissertation research in the United States, not a US degree, and it is strictly pre-doctoral: applicants who already hold a PhD, or who are at the final stage of thesis submission, are not considered, and your expected submission date must fall at least three months after the grant ends. Employees of the Government of India and of state governments are ineligible across every Fulbright-Nehru fellowship — the IAS, IPS, IRS, IFS and allied services, state civil services and ministry staff — while researchers and academics at CSIR, ICAR, DRDO, ISRO, ICMR, DBT and DST institutions, BARC, the IISc and the IITs are eligible.

How to apply

Applications go through USIEF, not to any US university. The substance is a clear justification for why this research has to be done in the United States and at the specific US institution you have identified, supported by evidence that you have surveyed the resources available in both countries — a general claim about better facilities does not survive that test. You also upload a published or presented paper, or extracts from your Master's or M.Phil. thesis, up to twenty pages.
