French exam dates in India: sessions, and they are not frequent
DELF and DALF run in sessions, not on demand, and in India that usually means a handful of opportunities a year at each Alliance Française. Miss a session and the wait is months — which, combined with the fact that a failed level means re-sitting everything, is the strongest argument on this route for not attempting a level too early.
How sessions work
- Each accredited centre publishes its own session calendar — in India, normally an Alliance Française.
- Registration closes well before the session; there is no late booking.
- The written papers run together on the session date; production orale is scheduled separately, sometimes on another day.
- The TCF is generally offered more often than DELF and DALF, which is one practical reason to choose it when a deadline is close.
There are more than 1,200 exam centres worldwide under France Éducation international, but the number in any one Indian city is small. Check your nearest centre's calendar before you build a plan around a particular month.
Planning backwards
- Find the application deadline and the certificate and level the programme names.
- Allow for results, which take several weeks for DELF and DALF — far longer than any English test.
- Identify two sessions, not one: the one you intend to sit and the one you would fall back to.
- Register as soon as the session opens, and prepare afterwards. You can improve before the date; you cannot create a seat.
Because the diplomas never expire, sitting earlier than strictly necessary carries no risk at all. This is the opposite of the English tests and it is the main planning advantage of the French route.
When the TCF is the better choice
- Your deadline is close and the next DELF session is after it.
- The application names TCF or TCF-DAP specifically.
- You want a placement rather than to commit to a level in advance.
Against that, the TCF lapses after two years. If you have time and the programme accepts either, the diploma is the better long-term buy.
