How to register for a French exam in India
French exams are booked through an accredited exam centre, not a national portal — in India, normally an Alliance Française. The registration itself is simple. The part worth care is what you register *for*, because a DELF will not substitute for a TCF-DAP and the fee is not refundable for choosing wrong.
The steps
- Confirm what your application names — DELF, DALF, TCF or TCF-DAP, and at which level.
- Find your accredited centre and open its session calendar.
- Register before the closing date, which falls well before the session.
- Pay the fee that centre publishes.
- Note both dates — the written session, and your separately scheduled oral.

That last row matters more than it looks. Many French institutions teach master's programmes entirely in English and require no French for admission. Confirm before spending a year on a certificate the programme will not ask for.
On the day
- Bring original photo identification matching your registration.
- The written papers run together — listening, reading and writing in one block.
- Production orale is separate, and you are given preparation time before the monologue.
- For the oral, arrive early enough to settle. It is the paper most affected by walking in flustered.
If you need to change or cancel
Transfer and refund rules are set by the exam centre and are generally less flexible than the big English tests — there is no equivalent of a rescheduling fee tier. Read your centre's terms before registering, and treat a session booking as a commitment rather than a placeholder.
