French results: how DELF is marked and what a pass means

How a DELF result works

• The four papers are marked out of 25 each, for a total of 100.
• You need 50 out of 100 overall to be awarded the diploma.
• You also need a minimum of 5 out of 25 in each paper — so a zero-scoring paper fails the whole level however well the others went.
• Pass, and the diploma is awarded at that level and is valid for life.

That minimum per paper is what catches candidates who have avoided speaking. A strong reader with no oral practice can clear 50 overall and still fail on production orale.

What the diploma is worth

• DELF B2 allows entry into French, European and Francophone universities and into certain grandes écoles — and France Éducation international states that it also allows you to obtain French nationality.
• DALF C1 is increasingly expected for demanding programmes.
• Both are recognised worldwide and issued by the Ministry of National Education.
• Neither expires.

The TCF is read differently

The TCF places you on a level from A1 to C2 rather than certifying one. There is no pass or fail — you get the level your performance earns, and the attestation is valid for two years.

That two-year clock is the planning difference. If you sit the TCF early and apply late, you may be sitting it again; if you sit a DELF early, you never will.

If you fail a level

DELF is not modular, so a failed level means re-sitting all four papers at the next session. Two consequences worth acting on:

• Do not attempt a level early. The cost of failing is the whole exam fee and a wait for the next session, which may be months.
• Do not neglect one paper. The 5-out-of-25 minimum means one untouched skill can sink an otherwise comfortable pass.
