IELTS band scores: what each band means and when results arrive
IELTS is not passed or failed. Every section is reported on a band from 0 to 9, and the four are averaged into an overall band. What matters for an application is usually two numbers: the overall band, and the minimum each individual section has to clear.
The nine bands, in plain terms
| Band | Level | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| 9 | Expert user | Full operational command: accurate, fluent and complete understanding |
| 8 | Very good user | Fully operational command with occasional unsystematic inaccuracies |
| 7 | Good user | Operational command, with occasional inaccuracies and misunderstandings in some situations |
| 6 | Competent user | Generally effective command despite some inaccuracies and misunderstandings |
| 5 | Modest user | Partial command, coping with overall meaning in most situations |
| 4 | Limited user | Basic competence limited to familiar situations |
| 3 | Extremely limited user | Conveys and understands only general meaning in very familiar situations |
| 2 | Intermittent user | Great difficulty understanding spoken and written English |
| 1 | Non-user | No ability beyond a few isolated words |
| 0 | Did not attempt | No assessable information |
How the overall band is worked out
The four section bands are averaged, and the average is rounded to the nearest whole or half band. The rounding is worth understanding, because it decides borderline cases:
- An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band — 6.25 becomes 6.5.
- An average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band — 6.75 becomes 7.
- Anything below .25 rounds down to the whole band; between .25 and .75 it sits at the half band.
So a student on 6.5, 6.5, 6.0, 6.0 averages 6.25 and is reported as 6.5. Half a band on one section is often the difference between meeting a requirement and missing it, which is what makes One Skill Retake worth considering.
When results arrive
- IELTS on Computer — results are typically available within 3 to 5 days of the test.
- Paper-based results were released about 13 days after the test. IDP India has discontinued that format.
- You can preview your result online before the Test Report Form is issued.
Validity, and what universities actually ask for
An IELTS score is valid for two years from the test date. Work backwards from your application deadline rather than forwards from today — a result that expires between the offer and the visa is a result you will be sitting again.
Most taught master's programmes in the UK, Australia and Ireland ask for an overall 6.5 with no section below 6.0; competitive and professional programmes go to 7.0 with 6.5 in each section. The number that fails more applications than any other is the section minimum, not the overall — a candidate with 7.0 overall and 5.5 in Writing does not meet a "6.5 with no band below 6.0" requirement.
Check the requirement on the programme's own page, and check whether the university accepts your test type — UKVI results and standard IELTS results are not interchangeable for every purpose.
If a section comes back low
Two routes, and they answer different questions. One Skill Retake (INR 12,650) lets you re-sit a single section and receive a new Test Report Form — the right choice when you know one skill let you down and the others are comfortable. An Enquiry on Results (from INR 13,500) has your existing answers re-marked and is refunded if your band rises — the right choice when the score does not match what you know you produced.
