About University of Sunderland
The University of Sunderland grew out of Sunderland Technical College, founded in 1901 to serve the shipyards and glassworks of the Wear, became a polytechnic in 1969 and a university in 1992. That industrial ancestry still shapes it: this is a practical, employment-focused institution rather than a research-elite one. Teaching is split between the City Campus on Chester Road and the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's, a riverside site next to the Anglo-Saxon monastery that gives it its name, and the university also operates campuses in London and Hong Kong. Its best-known provision is in health and the professions. The School of Pharmacy has a long and solid reputation, Sunderland opened a new medical school in 2019, and nursing, public health, psychology and social work are all substantial. Beyond health, the university is strong in engineering and automotive subjects — Nissan's largest European plant is a few miles away and shapes both the curriculum and the placement pipeline — and in media, journalism and film, taught in the David Puttnam Media Centre, alongside tourism, events and business. Programmes are heavily accredited and many are offered in a "professional practice" or extended format that builds in a work placement. Sunderland sits on the North Sea coast in Tyne and Wear, fifteen minutes by Metro from Newcastle, with some of the lowest living costs of any UK university city and a long coastline of beaches at Roker and Seaburn. For Indian postgraduates the appeal is cost and accessibility. Published 2026/27 international postgraduate full-time fees sit in an £18,000–£19,000 band for most masters, with the MBA at £20,000, and the university offers instalment plans for international fee payers. Entry requirements are moderate, there are January as well as September starts on many courses, and the Indian student community in the North East is large and well established. It is a sensible choice for a career-oriented masters at a controlled total cost.

Entry requirements
Typically for broadly accessible UK universities, a three-year Indian bachelor's degree from a UGC-recognised institution at around a 2:2 equivalent — commonly 50-60% or CGPA 5.5-6.5/10, though each university applies its own conversion; IELTS Academic usually 6.0-6.5 overall with no band below 5.5-6.0, so prepare towards the higher end and check whether the UKVI version is required. A three-year degree is not the obstacle for UK master's entry that it is in the US, but degree class and subject background are what move the decision, and popular programmes at these universities still ask for a 2:1. Exchange rates as of 18 Aug 2026 (31 days ago) — European Central Bank reference rates (AED via open.er-api.com), mid-market. The INR figure is converted from £ at that rate. Your bank's remittance rate will be worse than mid-market, and currencies move a percent or two a month, so use these for planning rather than as the amount you will actually pay.
