About University of Greater Manchester
This is the institution formerly known as the University of Bolton; it was granted permission by the Office for Students to rename itself the University of Greater Manchester, a change it made around its 200th anniversary. Anyone researching it will still find most third-party listings under the old name, and some of its own course URLs still carry "university-of-bolton" in the path, so both names refer to the same place. Its roots go back to 1824 and the Bolton Mechanics' Institute, one of the earliest of its kind in the country, and that vocational lineage still shapes what it does. University status came in 2005. It is a teaching-led institution rather than a research powerhouse, and its strengths are practical and applied: engineering (including a well-known motorsport and automotive performance engineering strand), nursing and health, education, computing, construction and the built environment, and special effects and media production. A medical school has been added in recent years. The campus is compact and sits in Bolton town centre, about a twenty-minute train ride from Manchester Piccadilly. That location is the pitch to international students: you get Greater Manchester's job market, airport and Indian community — one of the largest in the UK — while living somewhere considerably cheaper than central Manchester or London. Class sizes are small and the university makes a point of contact hours and tutor access rather than lecture-hall scale. For an Indian postgraduate applicant, the honest framing is that this is a value and access institution rather than a ranking play. Fees are among the lower end for UK master's degrees, entry requirements are more flexible than at Russell Group universities, and the two-year post-study work visa applies exactly as it does anywhere else in the UK. Check the individual course page, as some programmes sit outside the standard fee.

Entry requirements
Typically for broadly accessible UK universities, a three-year Indian bachelor's degree from a UGC-recognised institution at around a 2:2 equivalent — commonly 50-60% or CGPA 5.5-6.5/10, though each university applies its own conversion; IELTS Academic usually 6.0-6.5 overall with no band below 5.5-6.0, so prepare towards the higher end and check whether the UKVI version is required. A three-year degree is not the obstacle for UK master's entry that it is in the US, but degree class and subject background are what move the decision, and popular programmes at these universities still ask for a 2:1. This is general guidance for the destination and varies by programme, not this university's own rule — your Vibedu counsellor confirms the exact bar free.

Living costs are an indicative national range in £, not this university's own figure. Exchange rates as of 18 Aug 2026 (30 days ago) — European Central Bank reference rates (AED via open.er-api.com), mid-market. The INR figure is converted from £ at that rate. Your bank's remittance rate will be worse than mid-market, and currencies move a percent or two a month, so use these for planning rather than as the amount you will actually pay.
