About University College Birmingham

University College Birmingham is a small, unapologetically vocational institution in the centre of Birmingham whose lineage runs back to Victorian cookery instruction. Its own history dates the origins to the 1880s Midland School of Cookery, formally opening as the Birmingham and Midland School of Cookery at Colmore Row in 1891. The Duke of Edinburgh opened the Summer Row building in 1968, bringing nine scattered sites together as the Birmingham College of Food and Domestic Arts; the Privy Council granted taught degree-awarding powers in November 2007, and full university status followed in December 2012. That heritage still defines it. UCB is best known nationally for hospitality management, culinary arts, food science, bakery, tourism and events, taught with a strong industry-placement culture, professional kitchens and training restaurants. Around that core it has built business, sport, education, health and computing provision. The postgraduate portfolio is business-weighted: an MBA, international business management, enterprise management, finance and accounting, aviation management, computer science and psychology conversion routes. For an Indian applicant the appeal is price and practicality. At £17,000 for the MBA and £17,500 for most Band 1 masters in 2026/27, fees sit well below the Russell Group, and the university offers Early Action Scholarships worth £3,500–£4,500 to international students who meet deposit deadlines, plus merit awards. Teaching happens on a compact, modern city-centre campus, so there is no commute. Birmingham has one of the UK's largest South Asian populations, direct flights to India, and living costs far below London. The honest caveat: this is a teaching-focused university college with a small research base, so if a UK or US PhD is the eventual goal, weigh that against a more research-intensive alternative.

Entry requirements

Typically for broadly accessible UK universities, a three-year Indian bachelor's degree from a UGC-recognised institution at around a 2:2 equivalent — commonly 50-60% or CGPA 5.5-6.5/10, though each university applies its own conversion; IELTS Academic usually 6.0-6.5 overall with no band below 5.5-6.0, so prepare towards the higher end and check whether the UKVI version is required. A three-year degree is not the obstacle for UK master's entry that it is in the US, but degree class and subject background are what move the decision, and popular programmes at these universities still ask for a 2:1. This is general guidance for the destination and varies by programme, not this university's own rule — your Vibedu counsellor confirms the exact bar free.

Exchange rates as of 18 Aug 2026 (31 days ago) — European Central Bank reference rates (AED via open.er-api.com), mid-market. The INR figure is converted from £ at that rate. Your bank's remittance rate will be worse than mid-market, and currencies move a percent or two a month, so use these for planning rather than as the amount you will actually pay.
