About University of Essex
Essex opened in 1964 in the grounds of Wivenhoe Park, a Capability Brown landscape on the edge of Colchester that John Constable painted; the university dropped a set of concrete towers and stepped squares into it, and the contrast between parkland, lakes and brutalist teaching blocks is the campus's defining image. It was designed from the start to be radical and international, and it still is: something close to 140 nationalities are represented, and a large share of the postgraduate body comes from outside the UK, so an Indian student is not an unusual presence here. Its academic identity is social science. Politics and international relations are among the strongest in Britain, sociology and criminology are long-established, and the Human Rights Centre and the Institute for Social and Economic Research give the place serious weight in policy and survey research — the Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis has trained quantitative researchers from around the world for fifty years. Economics is well regarded, and the Department of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering has real depth in artificial intelligence, robotics, data science and telecommunications, which is where a lot of Indian engineering graduates land. Essex Business School, based in a striking timber building on the Colchester campus, runs the usual one-year MSc conversions plus an MBA, and East 15 Acting School operates from Loughton and Southend. Colchester is Britain's oldest recorded town, under an hour from London Liverpool Street, and considerably cheaper than living in the capital. Note that Essex publishes 2026-27 fees only on individual course pages — MSc Management (International), for example, is listed at £24,675 for October 2026 entry.

Entry requirements
Typically for broadly accessible UK universities, a three-year Indian bachelor's degree from a UGC-recognised institution at around a 2:2 equivalent — commonly 50-60% or CGPA 5.5-6.5/10, though each university applies its own conversion; IELTS Academic usually 6.0-6.5 overall with no band below 5.5-6.0, so prepare towards the higher end and check whether the UKVI version is required. A three-year degree is not the obstacle for UK master's entry that it is in the US, but degree class and subject background are what move the decision, and popular programmes at these universities still ask for a 2:1. This is general guidance for the destination and varies by programme, not this university's own rule — your Vibedu counsellor confirms the exact bar free.

Living costs are an indicative national range in £, not this university's own figure. Exchange rates as of 18 Aug 2026 (30 days ago) — European Central Bank reference rates (AED via open.er-api.com), mid-market. The INR figure is converted from £ at that rate. Your bank's remittance rate will be worse than mid-market, and currencies move a percent or two a month, so use these for planning rather than as the amount you will actually pay.
