TOEFL exam pattern 2026: the test changed, and most guides did not

The current structure

Base time excludes directions — allow about two hours in total. Because the test adapts, both the time and the number of items you see can vary.

What "adaptive" means for you

The test adjusts as you answer, which has two practical consequences. Difficulty is feedback, not failure: a section that feels hard usually means you are being placed high, and students who read it as going badly start rushing, which is what actually costs marks. And you cannot bank on a fixed number of questions — plan by pace and steadiness rather than by counting down items.

Reading

Fifty items in about thirty minutes, across three task types that are more varied than the old single-format passages.

• Complete the Words — short items testing vocabulary and form directly.
• Read in Daily Life — practical, non-academic texts.
• Read an Academic Passage — the closest thing to the old reading section.

Fifty items in thirty minutes is well under a minute each, so this section is now a test of speed as much as comprehension. Long, careful re-reading is no longer affordable.

Listening

Forty-seven items in about twenty-nine minutes, from single-response items up to full academic talks.

• Listen and Choose a Response — short, conversational, fast.
• Listen to a Conversation — campus and everyday exchanges.
• Listen to an Announcement — functional information.
• Listen to an Academic Talk — the lecture format.

Note-taking is allowed and still matters on the longer items, but the short ones reward simply staying alert — the gap between items is small.

Writing

Twelve items in about twenty-three minutes, and the shape is completely different from the old two-essay section.

• Build a Sentence — controlled, mechanical items testing structure.
• Write an Email — a functional task with a purpose and a register to match.
• Write for an Academic Discussion — the one task carried over: a professor's question and two students' posts, to which you add your own contribution.

For the discussion task, engage with what a named student said, state your position, support it with one concrete example, and extend the conversation. It is marked as a contribution, so an essay that ignores the thread reads as if you did not read it.

Speaking

Eleven items in about eight minutes — much shorter than the old four-task section, and built on two types.

• Listen and Repeat — you hear a sentence and say it back. Start immediately, keep going through any stumble, and do not restart: fluency is what is being measured.
• Take an Interview — a structured exchange rather than a set of prepared monologues.

The old advice about memorising 45-second templates for independent and integrated tasks no longer applies. What helps now is speaking promptly, clearly and continuously.
