Merit-based and need-based scholarships
Most funding available to Indian students abroad is merit-based. Need-based aid exists but is largely reserved for domestic students in the US and UK — a misunderstanding that costs applicants months of effort aimed at the wrong category.

What is open to you
| Type | Assessed on | Open to Indian students? |
|---|---|---|
| Merit | Academic record, achievement, potential | Yes — most international funding |
| Need-based | Family financial circumstances | Rarely abroad; common in Indian schemes |
| Category-based | Community, background, gender, discipline | Yes, where you qualify |
| Assistantship | Work you do for the department | Yes, mainly at postgraduate level |
The third row is worth real attention. Category-based awards have a far narrower applicant pool than open merit awards, which makes them the best odds available to anyone who qualifies.
Where need is assessed
- Indian government and state schemes frequently assess income, and that is where need-based support genuinely exists for Indian students.
- A few international institutions offer need-aware aid to international students; they are highly selective and the aid is substantial.
- Trusts sometimes weigh circumstances alongside merit.
Where income certificates are required, start them early — they are issued by state authorities and take weeks, and they are the usual cause of a missed deadline on Indian schemes.
