Writing a scholarship essay or statement
Scholarship panels read hundreds of essays that are all well written and all say the same things. What separates the funded ones is specificity — a named problem, a named plan, and evidence you have already started.

What panels are actually reading for
| They ask | Weak answer | Strong answer |
|---|---|---|
| Why this course? | It matches my interests | Named modules, and what you cannot learn at home |
| Why you? | I am hardworking and passionate | A thing you built, led or changed, with an outcome |
| What afterwards? | I want to contribute to my country | A sector, a role, a first step you can name |
| Why now? | It is the right time for me | What changed, and what you did about it |
Every weak answer in that column is true of thousands of applicants. Every strong one is true of you and nobody else, which is the whole test.
Practical craft
- Open with something concrete, not a quotation or a statement about the importance of education.
- One idea per paragraph, developed.
- Answer the question asked. A good essay answering a slightly different prompt is the most common way strong applications fail.
- Cut the adjectives. Panels discount self-description and read evidence.
- Have someone outside your field read it and tell you what you are claiming.
Do not reuse one essay across awards. Each prompt is different, and a recycled answer is visible in a paragraph — usually the one that does not quite fit the question.

A specific reason for this course, evidence of what you have already done, and a concrete plan afterwards. Specificity is what separates funded applications.
Not without rewriting. Prompts differ and a recycled essay reads as one, usually in the paragraph that does not answer the question.
