Eligibility
Two filters do most of the work here. Your most recent university degree should not date back more than six years at the application deadline, which rules out mid-career applicants returning after a long gap. And DAAD cannot fund a master's you have ALREADY STARTED in Germany — funding is only for programmes beginning in the winter semester of the following year, so the timing has to be planned a year ahead rather than arranged once you are enrolled. Your first degree must be complete by the time funding begins. Having already spent time in Germany does not disqualify you provided it is no more than 15 months at the closing date.
The application is a written case rather than a form: a tabular CV of at most three pages, a letter of motivation of one to three pages setting out your academic and personal reasons for studying in Germany, and a current transcript showing individual grades. It funds either a full master's at a state or state-recognised German university, or one year in Germany as part of a master's you are taking at your home university — two quite different propositions sharing one name.
