Dubai student visa interview

Whether a Dubai student visa involves an interview, and what it covers. Not every route has one, and where there is no formal interview there is often still a credibility assessment — which asks the same questions in a different form.

At a glance

VisaStudent residence permit (UAE) — issued in Dubai under the GDRFA-Dubai service "Issuing a residency permit to a student", and federally under ICP's "Issuing Residency Permit" (student category). It is always preceded by an entry permit filed by the sponsoring university. There is no separate "student visa" applied for at a UAE embassy in India — the accredited university/college acts as host and sponsor (a UAE-resident parent may sponsor instead).

The position for this country

There is no UAE embassy or consular visa interview in India for a student residence permit. The university files the entry permit electronically with GDRFA-Dubai or ICP, and the applicant does not attend a visa interview. What you do attend, after arriving in the UAE: (1) the medical fitness test at an approved centre — mandatory for applicants 18 and above, and screening for communicable disease including HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis is compulsory for all residency applicants; and (2) biometric capture (fingerprints/photograph) for the Emirates ID at an ICP/authorised registration centre — GDRFA lists an "ID receipt" among the documents required to issue the student residence permit. Universities may hold their own admission interview or English placement test, but that is an academic step, not an immigration one.

What is actually being assessed

Every student visa interview, whatever it is called, is testing one thing: whether you are a genuine student who intends to study, can afford it, and whose plan makes sense. The questions vary; that question does not.

  • Why this course? An answer that could apply to any course is the most common weakness.
  • Why this university, and why this country? Specific reasons, not rankings.
  • Who is funding you, and how? Your answer must match your documents exactly.
  • What will you do afterwards? Coherent with the course and with your background.

Preparing properly

  1. Know your own application. Inconsistency with what you submitted is the fastest way to a refusal.
  2. Be able to say what the course contains — modules, not just its title.
  3. Know who is paying, how much, and where it came from.
  4. Answer briefly and directly. Over-explaining reads as rehearsed.
  5. Do not memorise answers. Credibility assessments are designed to detect exactly that.

Our mock visa interview tool at /mock-visa-interview runs these questions with feedback, which is a better use of preparation time than reading lists of questions.

Interview — FAQs

The position for this country is set out above from the official guidance. Where no formal interview exists, a credibility assessment often covers the same ground.

Why this course, why this university and country, who is funding you, and what you intend to do afterwards. Your answers must match your submitted documents.
