Dubai student visa — step by step

Student residence permit (UAE) — issued in Dubai under the GDRFA-Dubai service "Issuing a residency permit to a student", and federally under ICP's "Issuing Residency Permit" (student category). It is always preceded by an entry permit filed by the sponsoring university. There is no separate "student visa" applied for at a UAE embassy in India — the accredited university/college acts as host and sponsor (a UAE-resident parent may sponsor instead).

Government fees only, as published on the official service pages (university/agency service charges are extra and are not government fees). GDRFA-Dubai, "Issuing a residency permit to a student": residence permit AED 200 + Knowledge Dirham AED 10 + Innovation Dirham AED 10 + fee inside the country AED 500 + delivery AED 20; the issuance fee "increases by AED 100 annually whenever the residency is over two years". ICP (federal channel) publishes for issuing a residency permit: application fee AED 100 + residence permit issuance AED 100 per year + smart services fee AED 100 (AED 300 per year total). GDRFA study/training visit visa (used where a short study-purpose visit visa is issued instead): AED 200 for 30 days / AED 300 for 60 days / AED 400 for 180 days, plus 5% VAT, security deposit AED 1,000, deposit service fee AED 20 and deposit collection/reimbursement AED 40. Medical fitness test, Emirates ID and health insurance are charged separately and are not published as a single fixed national figure — confirm current amounts at the DHA-approved medical fitness centre and at ICP before you budget.

Only the government service times are officially published, and they are short — the long part is the university's file preparation, which no authority publishes. As published: GDRFA-Dubai lists 48 hours for "Issuing a residency permit to a student" and 48 hours for the study/training visit visa; ICP lists 2 days for issuing a residency permit; GDRFA lists 5 days for the golden residence permit (top students/graduates). Plan around the sponsoring university's own timeline for the entry permit, medical test and Emirates ID appointment rather than these service-desk figures.

No fixed proof-of-funds or maintenance amount is published by ICP, GDRFA-Dubai or u.ae for the university-sponsored student residence permit — unlike the UK or Australia, the UAE does not set a published bank-balance figure for students. What is officially published is (a) valid UAE health insurance as a condition of the residence permit (mandatory in Dubai under Dubai Health Insurance Law No. 11 of 2013) and (b) for the GDRFA study/training visit visa route, a security deposit of AED 1,000 plus AED 20 deposit service fee and AED 40 deposit collection/reimbursement. In practice the university sets the financial evidence it wants (tuition payment or deposit, and bank statements), so treat any "minimum balance" quoted by a consultant as a university rule, not a UAE government rule.

Working is not automatic with a student residence permit — a separate permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) is required. MOHRE publishes a "Training and Work Permit for Students", described as allowing an establishment to train or employ a student in the country who has reached the age of 15, and a "Part Time Work Permit", under which working hours or days are fewer than a full-time employee's and the holder may work for more than one employer after obtaining the permit. A non-national student needs a valid residence visa, a No Objection Certificate from the institution, and a medical fitness certificate for the job. The widely quoted "20 hours per week" cap does NOT appear on MOHRE's official service pages that we could verify, so we are not stating an hours figure — confirm the current cap with MOHRE or the university before relying on it. Free-zone campuses (e.g. Dubai Knowledge Park, Dubai International Academic City) may run their own internship/work-permit process through the free-zone authority.

There is no UAE embassy or consular visa interview in India for a student residence permit. The university files the entry permit electronically with GDRFA-Dubai or ICP, and the applicant does not attend a visa interview. What you do attend, after arriving in the UAE: (1) the medical fitness test at an approved centre — mandatory for applicants 18 and above, and screening for communicable disease including HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis is compulsory for all residency applicants; and (2) biometric capture (fingerprints/photograph) for the Emirates ID at an ICP/authorised registration centre — GDRFA lists an "ID receipt" among the documents required to issue the student residence permit. Universities may hold their own admission interview or English placement test, but that is an academic step, not an immigration one.
