How to apply for a Dubai student visa

The process

Get an unconditional offer from a licensed Dubai institution. The institution must be licensed to operate in the UAE and approved by the Ministry of Education or the competent emirate-level education authority — GDRFA lists this approval as a condition of the student residence permit. Confirm the licence before paying anything, because a non-licensed provider cannot sponsor a residence permit.

Get your Indian academic documents attested for UAE use. Degree, diploma and school certificates for UAE use go through the attestation chain in India (state authority, MEA, UAE Embassy/BLS) followed by MOFAIC attestation in the UAE. Start this early — it is the step that most often delays a Dubai admission file, and turnaround times are set by the state boards, not by any UAE authority.

The university files the entry permit — you do not apply yourself. Your university's Student Affairs office submits the entry permit application to GDRFA-Dubai (for Dubai institutions) or ICP, acting as your host and guarantor. u.ae states that Student Affairs offices at universities will facilitate the process; individual applications sent directly to GDRFA or ICP are not the route.

Enter the UAE on the entry permit and start status processing within 60 days. ICP publishes that the foreigner's stay must not exceed sixty (60) days from the date of entry to complete the residence issuance procedures, and that overstay fines of AED 50 per day apply after the permit expires or is cancelled. Book your flight so you land with the full window available, not in the last fortnight.

Take the medical fitness test at an approved UAE centre. Applicants aged 18 and above must pass a medical fitness test; screening includes tuberculosis for all new arrivals and a compulsory HIV/AIDS test, with positive cases refused residency. In Dubai this is done at DHA-approved medical fitness centres — the university usually books the slot as part of the visa file.

Register biometrics and apply for the Emirates ID. Fingerprints and photograph are captured at an ICP/authorised registration centre and the Emirates ID application receipt is one of the documents GDRFA requires to issue the student residence permit. The card is delivered by authorised courier after the residence permit is stamped.

Residence permit issued, then renew each year and know your post-study window. u.ae states the student visa is given for a duration of one year at a time, renewable for a similar period on proof of continuation of study from the institution; ICP states the residence duration is determined by the study programme and that the student may remain in the UAE for 180 days after completing the study period. High achievers should separately check the golden residence route for top students and graduates.

Where the dependencies bite

• The offer comes before almost everything. Most routes cannot begin without an unconditional place.
• Financial evidence has a holding period, which starts before the application and cannot be compressed.
• A loan sanction letter, where you are using one, sits between the offer and the application.
• Biometrics and medicals are appointment-based, and appointment availability is the hidden constraint in peak season.

Before you submit

1. Read your own application back as an officer would, looking for anything unexplained.
2. Check every date and figure against the supporting document it comes from.
3. Confirm the fee and the route are the current ones on the official source below.
4. Keep a complete copy of everything you submitted, in the order you submitted it.

A refusal is far more expensive than a delay: it must be disclosed on future applications to several countries, and it is harder to explain than a late submission. If something is not ready, the cost of waiting a week is usually lower than it feels.
