Duolingo English Test speaking: four items, and a recording universities watch
The Duolingo English Test has four speaking items. Three feed your score; the Speaking Sample does not, and is sent to every institution that receives your results. Because it comes at the end of an hour, it is routinely the weakest thing an admissions officer sees.
The four items
| Item | How many | Scored by the engine |
|---|---|---|
| Speak About the Photo | 1 | Yes |
| Read, Then Speak | 1 | Yes |
| Interactive Speaking | 1 set of 6–8 | Yes |
| Speaking Sample | 1 | No — sent to institutions |
What a scoring engine measures
- Keep going. Continuous speech scores; silence does not, and a long pause can end the recording.
- Do not restart. A fluent sentence with a wrong word beats a corrected one.
- Speak clearly, not quickly. Intelligibility is the measure, and speed costs word endings.
- Fill the time. An item that stops early has given the engine less to score.
This is the opposite of interview advice, where a thoughtful pause reads well. A machine hears a pause as a pause.
