Duolingo English Test writing: three items, one read by admissions
The Duolingo English Test has three writing items. Two feed your score. The third — the Writing Sample — is not scored by the engine at all, and is sent to every institution receiving your results, which makes it the most widely read and least prepared piece of writing on the test.
The three items
| Item | How many | Scored by the engine |
|---|---|---|
| Write About the Photo | 3 | Yes |
| Interactive Writing | 1 set of 2 | Yes |
| Writing Sample | 1 | No — sent to institutions |
Treating the sample as a formality is common and is a mistake: an admissions officer may read it beside your application essay, where a large gap in fluency is conspicuous.
What the engine rewards
- Enough content. Very short responses cannot demonstrate range, and length is the most common limiting factor.
- Range of structure. Varied sentence shapes, not a run of simple ones.
- Accuracy. Spelling and grammar are machine-checked consistently.
- Relevance. Describing the photo or answering the prompt, not writing a prepared paragraph.
