Why study in USA
The United States hosts the world's largest population of international students and remains the top destination for Indians, with more than 200,000 Indian students enrolled. Its universities dominate global rankings and offer unmatched breadth — from large public research universities to Ivy League and specialised STEM and business schools.
Degrees run longer than in the UK or Europe: a bachelor's takes four years and a master's typically one-and-a-half to two years, with flexibility to switch majors and combine subjects. Admission weighs GPA, standardised tests (GRE/GMAT for many postgraduate programmes, SAT for undergraduate), essays, recommendations and English scores.
Students enter on an F-1 visa, which permits up to 20 hours/week of on-campus work during term and full-time work in vacations. After graduation, Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows 12 months of paid work, extended by a further 24 months for eligible STEM graduates.
- Tuition varies widely by institution type — public universities are generally cheaper than private ones.
- Popular fields include computer science, data science, engineering, business analytics and health sciences.
- Applicants must show proof of funds covering the first year before the visa interview.

Expect roughly $20,000–$60,000/yr in tuition depending on the university and course, plus about $1,000–$2,500/month for living. A two-year master's commonly totals $70,000–$100,000 including living costs.
Your university issues an I-20 stating the estimated first-year cost (tuition plus living), and you must show funds to cover that — often around $40,000–$70,000. Acceptable evidence includes bank statements, education loans and affidavits of support.
On an F-1 visa you can work up to 20 hours/week on campus during term and full-time during holidays. Off-campus work is only permitted through authorised training such as CPT or OPT, and generally not in your first academic year.
Optional Practical Training (OPT) gives 12 months of work authorisation in your field, and STEM graduates can apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension — up to 36 months total. Many then move to an H-1B work visa via employer sponsorship.
Computer science, data science, engineering, business analytics, management (MBA/MS) and health sciences are the most sought-after, partly because many fall under STEM and qualify for the longer OPT extension.
For a Fall (August/September) intake, begin 12–15 months ahead: take GRE/GMAT and IELTS/TOEFL by summer, apply by December–January deadlines, then complete I-20, pay the SEVIS fee and book the visa interview once admitted.
