The University at Buffalo began in 1846 as a private medical college in downtown Buffalo, joined the public State University of New York system in 1962, and is now the largest and most comprehensive campus in SUNY. It enrols more than 29,000 students across roughly 300 degree programmes and 12 decanal units, runs over 100 research centres and institutes, and reports annual research expenditure approaching $350 million. It was the first public university in New York State elected to the Association of American Universities, the group of around 60 research-intensive North American institutions — a credential that matters when Indian employers or PhD admissions committees assess a US master's. UB is spread over three campuses: the main North Campus in suburban Amherst, the South Campus on Main Street in north Buffalo, and a growing Downtown Campus anchored on the Jacobs School of Medicine and the city's medical corridor. Its best-known strengths are engineering — particularly structural and earthquake engineering, where its shake-table laboratory is nationally significant — computer science and artificial intelligence, pharmacy, dentistry, public health and management. For Indian applicants UB is a familiar, high-volume destination, with large Indian cohorts in computer science, electrical and mechanical engineering, data science and management. Most of those programmes are STEM-designated, giving 36 months of OPT work authorisation after graduation. Buffalo's cost of living is among the lowest of any major US research city, which offsets a headline cost that looks steep in rupee terms, and teaching and research assistantships are reasonably available in engineering and the sciences. The trade-offs are a long, snowy winter and a regional job market smaller than Boston, New York or the Bay Area — though Toronto is under two hours away.

Typically for broadly accessible US universities, a four-year bachelor's degree with a GPA around 2.75-3.0/4.0; IELTS 6.0-6.5 overall or TOEFL 71-79, with the higher end the safer target to prepare for. Many programmes now waive the GRE, but some still require it, so confirm before you decide not to sit it. A three-year Indian bachelor's is judged case by case: it normally needs a course-by-course evaluation from WES or another NACES-member agency, and that evaluation may report three years of US study rather than four-year equivalence, so never assume it will be accepted.
