University of Hull

Founded in 1927 as University College Hull and granted its royal charter in 1954, the University of Hull is one of England's older civic universities and still occupies a single leafy campus of red brick and lawns about twenty minutes' walk from the city centre. Two things anchor its reputation. The first is scientific: George Gray's chemistry group at Hull developed the stable liquid crystal materials that made flat-panel LCD screens commercially possible, work that earned the university a Queen's Award and remains the thing chemists know Hull for. Hull is repeatedly ranked among the cheapest student cities in the UK, master's tuition sits comfortably below twenty thousand pounds a year, and the university runs regional scholarships including an Asia studentship. The city itself was UK City of Culture in 2017 and has a compact, walkable centre, a well-known marina and Old Town, and fast rail links to Leeds, York and London.
