About this programme
All technology around us is based on materials. Materials research has the great opportunity in solving grand societal problems, making game-changing discoveries and developing novel technologies in the fields of energy, electronics, food, water, safety, health and well-being, environment, sustainable use of resources, and urbanisation. New fascinating materials with unexpected properties and groundbreaking devices, tailored for the needs of our society, can change the way we live our everyday life. Materials research is the richest and most multidisciplinary field in natural sciences. The Master’s Programme in Materials Research is based on physics, chemistry, biology and medical sciences, mathematics and computer science, all taught in a cohesive, and self-contained way. We study and create for example biomaterials, nanomaterials, smart materials, polymers, composites, electronics, energy generation and storage as well as green and sustainable materials and applications of these. With our programme you may start training to become a Medical Physics Expert and a Radiation Protection Expert. These professions give you the right to work, e.g., in hospitals when you have achieved hospital physicist certification. We have very strong ties to industry and the technology start-up community. As an expert in materials research, your skills will be needed not only in research institutes and universities, but also in the high-tech industry as well as in hospitals. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of our programme, you will acquire a broad range of scientific skills and knowledge. Our programme is very international. We work with research groups worldwide and large infrastructures, e.g. CERN, the international fusion reactor ITER, international synchrotron light sources and x-ray free electron lasers, just to name a few. You have a possibility to do part of your studies and/or Master’s thesis in an international collaboration. We use the latest technology to develop methods for synthesising new materials, simulating them using supercomputers as well as characterising, manipulating and transforming matter using ultrasound, particle beams, and different wavelengths of light. During your undergraduate studies, you have a possibility to work in research laboratories, where you get to use real research equipment for real research in an international environment.
