About this programme

The Doctoral Programme in Biomedicine (DPBM) focuses on biomedicine, molecular medicine and translational medicine. It aims to ensure high-quality postgraduate education for doctoral researchers by providing them with the skills needed for both professional research careers and for demanding expert positions. The doctoral programme is coordinated by the Faculty of Medicine. While conducting their doctoral research, our doctoral researchers work at the Faculty of Medicine, the units of the Helsinki Institute of Life Science (Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland, Institute of Biotechnology, Neuroscience Center), private research institutes on Meilahti Campus or at other faculties, for example on the Viikki Campus.  The doctoral research and education in DPBM are conducted in a high-impact research environment. For example, the newly selected Research Council of Finland’s Center of Excellence in Immune-Endothelial Interfaces (IMMENS) and Profiled area of Sustainable Wellbeing Across Lifespans (SWAN) are directed to the Faculty of Medicine and contribute to DBPM education and doctoral research. Discipline-specific education provided by the DPBM includes course-based studies that develop and advance doctoral researchers’ scholarly skills and critical thinking, preparing them for professional life after graduation. The programme also encourages participation in international conferences, symposia, research visits and similar activities, which facilitates networking with the wider research community.  The DPBM supports doctoral researchers and their supervisors at all stages of their doctoral thesis process and strives to promote their unity and inclusivity, for example, through tutoring and extracurricular events.  With English as its primary language, the programme hosts approximately 300 doctoral researchers, of whom roughly 90% complete their doctoral theses at the Faculty of Medicine. Our doctoral researchers are a diverse and international group of different nationalities. Learn more about the doctoral programme on the University of Helsinki website.
