About this programme

“Join us and develop your expertise in EU, European and Nordic politics and societies.” European and Nordic studies (ENS) is an interdisciplinary master’s programme that introduces you to the study of the European Union, wider European and Nordic politics and societies. It is intended for students who want to explore EU and Europe from various perspectives and analyse political and historical developments in the region.  Finland and Helsinki are particularly fascinating places to study European politics and history. The changes in geopolitical and security landscape have altered the role of North Europe. ENS offers courses that help you to understand the Nordic societies and their position in international politics. You will be able to follow these developments from the first row as our teaching and research looks at Europe and Norden as a complex and constantly evolving area.  European and Nordic studies research in the University of Helsinki focuses to the regional characteristics and diversity. Our European Union research focuses on EU institutions, governance and politics, often from the perspective of core EU values, including their internal and external contestation.  Our expertise on the history and dynamics of Nordic cooperation is unique. The programme draws primarily from EU studies, Nordic Studies, political science, history, and area studies. However, ENS also includes optional courses in several other disciplines: global politics, communication studies, philosophy, law and sociology. The programme gives you much flexibility in designing your studies and developing your own area of specialization. The programme has two study tracks. Depending on your choice of track, you will graduate with either a Master of Arts or a Master of Social Science degree. The programme trains you to become a critical and independent thinker who has the necessary skills and knowledge to analyse and engage with current European Union, European and Nordic issues.  This programme is right for you if you:  want to learn more about current EU and European issues   are interested in regional approaches, and especially Nordic societies and cultures appreciate flexibility and a possibility to develop your own specialization Further information about the studies on the Master's programme website.
