Bradford received its royal charter in 1966, but its ancestry runs back to the Bradford Mechanics' Institute of 1832 and the technical college that grew out of it, and that industrial, applied-science character has never really left. It is best known for a handful of things: the School of Management, which was one of the first British business schools and remains internationally accredited; pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, which have a strong national reputation; engineering and computing; and archaeological and forensic sciences, which are genuinely distinctive. The university also has an unusual institutional identity around peace and development — its Department of Peace Studies and International Development is the largest of its kind in the world — and a long-standing commitment to social mobility, which it treats as a core mission rather than a marketing line. The main campus is a single site close to Bradford city centre, walkable and self-contained, with a well-regarded student village. Bradford is a working West Yorkshire city with one of the largest South Asian populations in the UK, which for many Indian postgraduate students means an unusually easy landing: familiar food, groceries, places of worship and community are all immediately available, and the cost of living is among the lowest of any major UK university city.
