PTE Speaking & Writing: eight item types, and what each one scores
Part 1 of PTE Academic runs eight item types, and most of them feed more than one skill score — Read Aloud contributes to Speaking and Reading, Summarise Written Text to Reading and Writing. The test is machine-scored, so fluency is not an impression an examiner forms; it is measured.
The eight item types
| Item type | Contributes to |
|---|---|
| Personal Introduction | Not scored — sent to institutions |
| Read Aloud | Speaking and Reading |
| Repeat Sentence | Speaking and Listening |
| Describe Image | Speaking |
| Re-tell Lecture | Speaking and Listening |
| Answer Short Question | Speaking and Listening |
| Summarise Written Text | Reading and Writing |
| Essay | Writing |
This is why a candidate "weak at listening" who skips Repeat Sentence practice is also damaging their Speaking score. Plan by item, not by skill.
What a machine measures
- Oral fluency — an even pace with no unnatural pauses, no restarts, no fillers. "Um" is counted.
- Pronunciation — whether the sounds match what the engine expects for those words.
- Content — whether the required words and ideas are present.
Two consequences follow, and they are the opposite of interview advice. Never restart a sentence — a fluent sentence with a wrong word scores better than a corrected one. And do not pause to think: silence beyond a short gap ends the recording.
