The rule
Mispronouncing one word costs a fraction of a pronunciation mark. Stopping and re-reading the sentence costs the fluency score for the whole item. The engine measures continuity, so an imperfect continuous reading outscores a corrected one every time.
- If you stumble, carry on from where you are.
- Do not repeat a word to get it right.
- Do not slow down after a mistake — pace is part of the measure.
Using the seconds before the tone
- Scan for long or unfamiliar words and decide how you will say them.
- Mark where the natural pauses fall — at commas and clause boundaries.
- Decide which words carry the meaning; those take the stress.
- Begin as soon as the tone sounds. Waiting is recorded as hesitation.
Read at a steady, slightly deliberate pace. Rushing loses word endings, and endings carry the grammar the engine is listening for.
