dMAT Mathematical Equations: the maths is not the difficulty

The name misleads. The mathematics here is school level, and the subtest is reasoning dressed as arithmetic — which means revising mathematics you already know is the wrong preparation. What is tested is whether you can find the efficient route to an answer under time pressure.

Three habits that do the work

  1. Estimate before computing. Where the options are far apart, an approximation picks the answer and exact arithmetic is wasted time.
  2. Work backwards from the options. Single-choice items hand you five candidate answers; testing one is often faster than solving for it.
  3. Check what is being asked. Solving correctly for the wrong quantity is the most common loss, as it is on every quantitative test.

For an engineering or commerce graduate, the instinct is to set up and solve. On this subtest that instinct is frequently the slow route.

There is no formula sheet to memorise

g.a.s.t. states that the dMAT requires developed transfer and application skills rather than memorised factual knowledge. There is no formula sheet, no syllabus, and no past papers. Anyone selling a dMAT syllabus is selling something that does not exist.

The official preparation material — sample tasks, solutions and short videos showing how each part behaves on screen — is the only official material. On a timed digital test, knowing where the buttons are is worth marks.
