dMAT General Academic Module: answer from the material, not your degree

The subject module for the APS route. You are given a problem and then several questions about it, so the unit of work is the problem — and the careful reading you do at the start is paid back several times over. The most expensive habit candidates bring is answering from their degree instead of from the material.

Read the problem once, properly

  1. What is being claimed?
  2. What is the evidence for it?
  3. What is assumed rather than shown?
  4. What would change the conclusion?

Four answers to those questions cover most of what the attached set will ask. Because several questions share one problem, this reading is amortised — skimming to reach the first question is a false economy.

Your subject knowledge is a liability

g.a.s.t. is explicit that the tasks require transfer and application rather than memorised factual knowledge. There is no chemistry, physics or biology to revise. If your answer needs something the problem did not give you, it is the wrong answer however true it is in your field.

This catches engineering and commerce graduates hardest, because the material looks like something they know about. The test is whether you can reason from what is on the screen, not whether you know the subject.
