Tuition is typically NZD 30,000–55,000 per year for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, depending on subject. Immigration New Zealand also requires proof of about NZD 20,000 per year for living costs, so a full year commonly totals around NZD 50,000–75,000.
You must show full tuition for the first year plus NZD 20,000 for living costs (NZD 1,667/month for courses under a year), and usually return airfare. Funds generally need to have been available for at least six months unless they come from an approved loan or scholarship.
Eligible tertiary students can work up to 25 hours per week during the semester (increased from 20 hours in November 2025) and full-time during scheduled holidays such as the summer break. Work rights are stated on your student visa.
Degree-level graduates (Level 7 bachelor's and above) can generally apply for a Post-Study Work Visa of up to three years with open work rights, letting you work for any employer. You must apply within three months of your student visa expiring and show about NZD 5,000 in funds.
Common choices include IT and computer science, engineering, business and management, healthcare and nursing, agriculture and environmental science, and construction/project management. Many align with skills New Zealand employers need.
The two main intakes are February (Semester 1) and July (Semester 2), with some programmes offering a November intake. Aim to start applications around six to eight months ahead so you have time for admission, funds and the student visa.
