US university intakes: Fall and Spring
US universities admit in Fall and Spring, and the gap between them is wider than elsewhere — because assistantships, which are the main funding route for Indian postgraduates, are overwhelmingly allocated for Fall.

Fall carries the funding
- Assistantships are allocated with the Fall cohort; Spring openings are occasional and unreliable.
- Departmental funding cycles run annually, aligned to Fall.
- Fulbright and similar awards are tied to the main cycle.
- Spring entry usually means self-funding at least the first semester.
For a funded master's or PhD, Fall is not a preference, it is close to a requirement. For a self-funded programme the difference is much smaller.
The timeline
- About 14 months before Fall — GRE/GMAT and English tests; shortlist and contact faculty.
- 12 months — applications, which close in December and January for Fall.
- 6–7 months — offers and assistantship decisions.
- 4–5 months — I-20 issued; loan sanctioned.
- 3–4 months — visa appointment, which is the binding constraint in peak season.
Visa appointment availability is the single most common reason a US plan slips. Book as soon as the I-20 allows rather than when the documents feel complete.
