Canada university intakes
Canada runs three intakes, which is more flexibility than most destinations offer. The catch is that the third is small, and that entrance awards are often allocated as applications are assessed rather than on a deadline.

The three, in practice
| Intake | Scale | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| September | The main one | Every programme, most funding |
| January | Substantial | A good subset of programmes |
| May | Small | Limited programmes; confirm yours admits |
Because several entrance awards run until the money is allocated, applying early is itself a funding strategy here in a way it is not everywhere.
Study permit timing
- Apply for admission as early as the cycle opens.
- Secure the letter of acceptance, which the permit application needs.
- Arrange the financial evidence, including any GIC your route requires.
- Apply for the study permit with a realistic buffer against published processing times.
Check /visa-guide/canada/processing-time and /visa-guide/canada/financial-requirements before fixing your intake. The permit timeline, not the admission timeline, is usually what decides which intake is realistic.

Yes — September, January and May. May is the smallest and not every programme admits in it.
September. Several entrance awards are also allocated in order of assessment, so applying early matters as much as the intake does.
