Education loan without collateral
Most lenders will lend without collateral, and the question is not whether you can but what it costs. An unsecured loan is priced for the risk the lender is taking without security, and over a long repayment that difference is the largest single variable in what you pay.
What changes without security
| With collateral | Without | |
|---|---|---|
| Rate | Lower | Higher, often materially |
| Maximum amount | Larger | Capped, and the cap binds on expensive courses |
| Processing time | Longer — valuation takes weeks | Faster |
| Who decides | The security does much of the work | The co-applicant's income and credit do |
The cap is the part that catches people. An unsecured limit that comfortably covers a one-year UK master's may not cover two years in the US once living costs are added, and discovering that late means arranging security under time pressure.
When to arrange security anyway
- When the total need exceeds the unsecured cap. A partly secured loan is usually cheaper than an unsecured one plus a gap filled elsewhere.
- When you have three months. Valuation time is the real cost of security, and an early start removes it.
- When the co-applicant's income is hard to document, because security substitutes for the income the lender cannot verify.
What counts as collateral
- Residential or commercial property, which is the usual security and the slowest to value.
- Fixed deposits, which are the fastest and are sometimes accepted at a higher margin.
- Insurance policies and government securities, depending on the lender.
Agricultural land is frequently not accepted. If that is the family asset, establish the lender's position before building a plan around it.
