Education loan eligibility for studying abroad
The common assumption is that an education loan is assessed on the student. It is not. The student's admission establishes the purpose; the co-applicant establishes whether the loan gets repaid, and that is where the decision is made.
What is actually assessed
| Checked | On whom | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Admission letter | Student | Establishes purpose and amount |
| Academic record | Student | Secondary; a weak record rarely refuses a secured loan |
| Credit score | Co-applicant | The single most common reason for refusal |
| Documented income | Co-applicant | Decides the amount and often the rate |
| Existing obligations | Co-applicant | Existing EMIs reduce what you can borrow |
| Collateral | Family | Decides the rate band and the cap |
What to fix before applying
- Pull the co-applicant's credit report and correct errors. Disputed entries take weeks to resolve and refuse loans in the meantime.
- Clear small overdue amounts. A forgotten card balance in default outweighs a good income.
- Document the income properly — returns filed, bank statements consistent with them.
- Do not apply to six lenders at once. Each enquiry is recorded; two or three in one window is normal, six looks like distress.
Where the co-applicant's credit is genuinely poor, a second co-applicant or security is the route — not a different lender, because they all check the same bureaus.
Who can be a co-applicant
- Parents, usually.
- A spouse, where married.
- Siblings and, at some lenders, other close relatives — the accepted list varies and is worth confirming before planning around one.

On the co-applicant, primarily. The student's admission establishes the purpose; the co-applicant's income and credit establish repayment.
Lenders do not publish a single cut-off and it varies with security. What is consistent is that defaults and disputed entries refuse loans, so pull the report and clear them first.
