Forex, remittance and TCS on education payments

Paying a foreign university involves three separate costs that families routinely treat as one: the exchange rate spread, the transfer charges, and tax collected at source. Only the first two are costs — TCS is a prepayment of your own tax, and confusing them leads to bad decisions.

The three, separated

What it isIs it a cost?
Exchange spread The margin over the interbank rate your provider takes Yes, and it is the largest of the three
Transfer charges Fees for executing the remittance Yes
TCS Tax collected at source on foreign remittance No — it is adjustable against your tax liability

TCS can be claimed against your income tax or refunded when you file, so it is a cash-flow matter rather than a loss. The spread is the real cost and it is the one nobody shows you, because it is embedded in the rate rather than itemised.

Reducing what you actually pay

  1. Compare the rate, not the fee. A provider advertising zero charges and a poor rate is usually dearer than one charging a fee at a tight rate.
  2. Ask for the all-in cost in rupees for the exact amount you are sending.
  3. Check whether a remittance funded by an education loan is treated differently for TCS — the treatment differs from a self-funded one.
  4. Keep every remittance receipt. You need them to claim TCS and, in several visa routes, to evidence the payment.

TCS rates and thresholds under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme change with Finance Acts and the treatment of education remittances has changed more than once. We deliberately do not print a rate here — confirm the current position before budgeting.

Forex and TCS — FAQs

No. It is tax collected in advance and is adjustable against your income tax liability or refundable on filing.

Compare the all-in rupee cost for your exact amount across providers. The exchange spread, not the advertised fee, is usually the biggest component.
